In meiner Funktion als Präsident der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Zahnärztliche Implantologie hatte ich dieses Jahr das Vergnügen, die Academy of Osseointegration (AO) in den USA besuchen zu können. Der diesjährige Jahreskongress fand in Washington D.C. statt und stellte mit über 3.000 Teilnehmern den jährlichen Höhepunkt der amerikanischen Implantologieszene dar. Es war für mich ausgesprochen interessant zu erleben, wie die amerikanischen Kollegen mit dem Thema Implantologie umgehen. Auch auf dieser Seite des Atlantiks wird sie ganz sicher auf einem sehr hohen Niveau betrieben, aber ebenfalls „nur mit Wasser gekocht“.

Für eine Periimplantitis ist primär die bakterielle Plaque im submukosalen Biofilm verantwortlich. Entgegen der gängigen Meinung ist eine Periimplantitis relativ häufig: laut einer Untersuchung von Roos-Jansåker und Mitarbeitern waren 16% von 218 Patienten mit Implantaten von einer Periimplantitis betroffen.1 Bei der Behandlung ist die Infektionskontrolle durch -Plaqueentfernung, Plaquekontrolle und antimikrobielle Maßnahmen wichtig. Antibiotika und antiseptische Mittel zerstören jedoch nicht nur die aggressiven Periimplantitiserreger, sondern auch die physiologischen Bakterien der Mundflora. Eine Therapie mit -Parovaccinen stärkt dagegen gezielt das Immunsystem gegen die vorliegenden Erreger.
